Situation

Imagine you operate a dental clinic situated in the CBD of Brisbane. The building where your practice is situated is also the place of business for over fifty other dental practices. Every one of them hungry for new patients. Each of them vying for the same patient as you. The marketing for each of these practices is unavoidably similar. Every one of these dentists is trying to convince you they are either ‘better’, ‘faster’, or ‘cheaper’. So how is a potential patient meant to discern which practice to choose? This was the challenge facing Dr Simon Franks of Bite Dental. Radical differentiation was the obvious solution to this. But how?

Insight

Dr Simon Franks is a dentist who seldom talks dentistry with his patients. He’d rather talk to patients about a shared passion. Sport, literature or music are three common topics in his repertoire. Often, Simon refers to his patients as his friends. When you meet him it’s not hard to understand why. His relaxed, humorous and conversational manner make him totally relatable and genuinely likeable. This isn’t without its business utility either. Because it means a patient has to move to a new city for Dr Franks to lose them. His doctor-friend relationship is built on such a deep level of trust. And, this is also perhaps why patients action his treatment plans without hesitation. The question we began asking ourselves was how do we bottle up Simon and sell him? How do we get potential patients to meet Simon without actually meeting him? And, if they like him enough, maybe they’ll introduce him to their friends.

Solution

Create a Biography Series of twenty-five short films, in which Simon would tell his origins story, share his great loves and passions, and discuss the future of dentistry. It was a marketing strategy that wouldn’t rely on expensive advertising. But before any filming occurred, Gregory Gray (Director of Surf Pacific Biography Films), designed a narrative and began to prepare Dr Franks over eight in-depth sessions. From the 25 films, we strategically planned to edit two dynamic film trailers that would be shown on the prime real estate of the Bite Dental website. The homepage. This would ensure that most visitors would watch – and potentially share – the dynamic trailer. Both branded trailers featured a unique, fast-BPM soundtrack, but with a different agenda. The first trailer was aimed at the “Ascot mums” – a demographic of 35-50-year-old women living in an upmarket suburb of Brisbane. The second trailer would be aimed at a young, upwardly-mobile market working in Brisbane and seeking ‘cosmetic’ dentistry services.

During his school years Dr Franks played soccer. He was heavily into it. Rugby [union] held no appeal for him. It’s a very physical and concussion-inducing sport. So, while Dr Franks did a little team sports, surfing was what he really enjoyed. And still enjoys.
